AUSTRALIA'S NATIONAL CAPITAL

IDEAL.

From a Rotary perspective, the partnership with the World Peace Bell Association to locate a Peace Bell within the Canberra Nara Peace Park is a natural extension of the work of Rotary International. Rotary International work includes the Rotary Peace Centers and Peace Fellowships, the work through Shelter Box Australia, the work of The Rotary Foundation and the work already undertaken by the Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin through the annual Canberra Nara Candle Festival. The festival is held each year in the Canberra Nara Peace Park and was an initiative of the Rotary Club.

The development of a Peace Bell may be the most ambitious project undertaken by our Club.

Message from the ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr MLA for the World Peace Bell website hosted by Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin

I commend the Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin for its vision and determination to bring the World Peace Bell to Canberra.

The Bell, which is made from the melted coins of United Nations member countries, is a significant symbol of peace and has been installed in cities around the world.

I am very proud that this will be only the second World Peace Bell in Australia and will ring out on special occasions throughout the year, including the Canberra Nara Candle Festival, to remind Canberrans and visitors to the capital that our goal is for a peaceful world.

The location of the Bell adjacent to the Canberra Nara Peace Park is fitting and I know it will become an iconic part of the park and the foreshores of Lake Burley Griffin.

Thank you to the businesses who have already pledged their support for the World Peace Bell. I encourage Canberrans to get behind this inspiring project and I look forward to seeing it come to fruition.

Yours sincerely,
Andrew Barr MLA
Chief Minister

A PEACE POEM

A quote from the Chinese Philosopher Lao Tzu or Laozi. Both names are used for this person.

Philosophical Daoism traces its origins to Laozi, an extraordinary thinker who flourished during the sixth century B.C.E., according to Chinese sources. According to some modern scholars, however, Laozi is entirely legendary; there was never a historical Laozi.

If there is to be peace in the world,
There must be peace in the nations.
If there is to be peace in the nations,
There must be peace in the cities.
If there is to be peace in the cities,
There must be peace between neighbours.
If there is to be peace between neighbours,
There must be peace in the home,
If there is to be peace in the home,
There must be peace in the heart.
